Built for the readers
nobody built for.

You’ve seen the “intervention” programs. So have your students. Cartoon rewards, baby fonts, 1st-grade content with a “Grade 6” sticker on the cover — older struggling readers spot condescension instantly, and they disengage just as fast.

Juniper Reading CoLab is the ecosystem that was missing: structured word-level literacy built for grades 3–12 from the ground up. Navigate finds the gaps. Decode teaches the patterns. Every tool that follows builds on what came before.

Juniper Navigate

The free phonics screener and placement tool. Teachers enter phonics assessment data — from the built-in adaptive Juniper Screener or tools like CORE Phonics, DIBELS 8, aimswebPlus, FASTBridge, and easyCBM. Navigate identifies each student’s instructional starting point — the first level where decoding gaps appear — and generates a complete 8-level scope and sequence for every student.

Assessment coverage

Navigate accepts results from CORE Phonics Survey, DIBELS 8, aimswebPlus, FASTBridge, and easyCBM — but only the built-in Juniper Screener is designed to the same scope and sequence as Juniper Decode, covering all eight levels. Imported assessments cover some levels and not others; Navigate shows you exactly which levels each tool can and cannot see, and recommends the screener when a placement lands near a coverage gap.

  • 8 levels from alphabetic foundation through morphemic mastery, including the CLOVER syllable-type framework
  • Class-wide and individual scope & sequence views
  • Teacher-verified placement with manual override
  • No student PII required — first name and last initial only

[ The Research Behind the Design ]

Why students don’t disengage here.

Developmental psychologist Dr. David Yeager’s research shows the adolescent brain is wired to seek respect — and to shut down at the first hint of humiliation. Most intervention tools trigger exactly that shutdown. Every design decision in Decode applies what Yeager calls the mentor mindset: high standards with high support.

The standard stays high

Mastery thresholds on every decoding pattern — the bar never lowers because a student is struggling.

The support never leaves

Gradual release on every unit: the app models, guides, then steps back. Wrong answers get coaching, not penalties.

The framing removes shame

“You weren’t taught this” — never “you’re behind.” The gap belongs to the missing instruction, not the student.

The feedback is transparent

Students see why an answer was wrong — never a mystery score, never a black-box algorithm.
